Progesterone Supps vs. Progesterone in Oil

  1. My clinic thankfully uses the vaginal suppositories, but after 4 failed cycles (3 fresh, 1 FET), I'm wondering if I should suffer through the PIO shots for the last FET. Anyone feel strongly that the latter can make a difference? If Drs. insist on the the shots, what is their rationale?

  2. My doctor does a blood test to check for progesterone levels about 7 days after ER. If your progesterone level is too low, then he will make you change from the suppositories to PIO shots.

  3. I always used the suppositories too. But my new doctor told me that the injectibles are much more effective. If you are willing to do them, I would go with the injectibles. It seems like most doctors use PIO.

  4. I am on both the shots and the suppositories. I the shots are way more painful than the lupron, brevell and menopur. They leave you feeling all black and blue.

  5. I've done both and I actually prefer PIO. If you do the thinner oil (I am blanking on the name- sorry), it really isn't that bad. For my next cycle, I am planning to skip the suppositories and just do the PIO, unless I need both.

  6. I used both. I had a very bad reaction to the PIO and was switched to Crinone. I used it for all three cycles, including the one that has resulted in my current pregnancy. The main reason doctors prefer the PIO is because they can measure blood levels. The suppositories are absorbed directly into the cervix- which is why some REs prefer them. My RE for my third cycle doesn't monitor progesterone levels so it was left to me decide which I wanted to use.

I wish you the best of luck.

  8. I've used the supps for three failed IUI cycles and my first IVF cycle. I just had embryo transfer today and supposed to keep up with the supps twice a day. I don't mind the supps as long as I wear a liner due so light leakage. I would prefer the shots but my legs are already black and blue from the IVF shots!

The trick is to get it way up there. I've been using a tampon applicator to help get it up there. Any thoughts out there about continuing to use the applicator after transfer?

  9. I've had progesterone supp in my iuis, and bfn. I asked for pio when I did my ivf ad the clinic looked at me like I was from another planet bfn but my re thinks that pio is better because it's more concerntrated and it doesn't leak out like the supp. I am using pio for my d/e cycle too!!!

  10. I just ordered my meds (again) and I wanted to post back that progesterone in ethyl oleate is the one I use - I really recommend requesting this one if at all possible b/c it is much thinner than the other oils and the pain is very minimal.

  11. Hi All,

I have had 3 failed IVF rounds and am on my 4th with a new RE. I did PIO before, but new RE said that there's really not a difference in outcome due to suppositories or PIO. I chose suppositories, but now I am kind of regretting it. With the PIO, at least you know the progesterone is in you. With the suppositories, you're not sure whether they are working or not!

Anyway, I am only on day #1 with suppositories. If anyone has tips on the best way to use them, I would appreciate it. I used my finger this morning and then stayed in bed for about 20 minutes. Do any of you use an applicator or anything?

    Any BFPs with suppositories?

  12. Last cycle - I started on the PIO but had a reaction of sorts. The injection site was a little itchy but mainly I seemed to be having a chest/nasal congestion/coughing thing. So switched to supps...

However, at beta time- progesterone was only 12 so they had me add the PIO back in.

So for me - I did both

  13. Plankton With my 1st IVF I used Suppositories BFP have a son. Did 2 b2b FET's Suppositories again BFN. On my 2nd fresh cycle I was part of a research study and had to use PIO (cotten seed) BFP x3. I have since switched back to suppositories. Everyone has a different opinion on which is better. For me I was tired of the needles but it was defintely less messy kwim.

I too like you lie down after pushing it in..Hope that helps

  14. Plankton, I got a BFP and used the suppositories also. I am 14wks now and so far all is great. The nurse at my RE's office said just to put them in as far as you can, and your body will absorb as much as it needs.
