Progesterone lozenges?

  1. Hi everyone,

I was told by my clinic that they no longer use Projesteron injectables and they use suppositories and lozenges instead. I am a little worried, as the last 2 cycles we used the PIO and as much as I hated them, it did the job.

Has anyone used these and had a successful pg? They told me they could prescribe PIO if I prefer, but they have been using the non-injetable progesterone for 2 years and pg rates are the same. I am torn...Any thoughts?

my clinic uses prometrium supps for most cycles fresh and FET (but they do sometimes use PIO and crinone for some patients), but for the vast majority they use prometrium (by itself). They have really good stats, so I am positive they do work (and work well).

however, if you are not comfortable with something, even if they are considered "equal" or should be the same, I think it is better to do what makes you "feel" better or more comfortable even just for your peace of mind and to ensure a lack of doubt (unless there is a medical reason not to do something of course).

I have not heard of progesterone "lozenges"...huh.

  3. I was on PIO's for 5 transfers, and did just fine until... I had an allergic reaction to it with the 5th transfer. My RE tried 3 different PIO's, but I was allergic to all 3. Go figure... My 6th transfer, he Rx'd Prometrium oral and vaginal supps. I didn't have any problems using them other than the leakage. I'm 21+ weeks pg, so it worked.

I've heard of P4 sublinguals, but I've never heard of it being used with IVF. It's a pretty good delivery method for health supps... Are the lozenges sublinguals?

  4. I took lozenges a long time ago, like 6+ years ago, with no success. However, that was before they found out my problem which is lack of progesterone production. The lozenges come in mint or lemon flavor. Who's your RE? You should just stick with the PIO since it "did the job" before.

  5. JayJay- I am with Dr Wilcox from HCR Pasadena. He said their entire clinic uses the supps and lozenges in lue of PIO.
Crystien- I am not sure actually. They just looked like these brown cubes, I suppose you just let them melt in your mouth. Since I haven't oficially started cycling yet (damn cyst!) I didn't get the instruction on the Progesterone use yet, but when I expressed my curiousity about the bag of lozenges I got in my box of meds, I was told that's what the clinic uses together with the supps and estrogen patches.
SendrikBlack- I haven't heared of them either until now that is

  6. I'm with Dr. Nelson . When I first started with HRC, I saw Dr. Batzofin but I switched to a different clinic after 2 fresh IVF and 1 FET with him. Dr. B was the one (if I remember correctly) who prescribed lozenges for me. I went back to HRC back in 2006 (after being with Dr. Acacio - SRIM) and started dseeing Dr. Nelson and have been with him since. Love the guy and Germaine and Saba! Dr. N. put me on PIO and vag supp for the last FET I did, back in 2008. You can ask Dr. W. if you can take PIO instead. He will put you on it.

I had a phone consult with Dr. N (2 weeks ago) and he will be putting me on the same protocol as I was in back in 2008, which will consist of estradiol, PIO and vag. capsules.

ETA: the lozenges I took were light blue squares (mint) and the lemon were yellow squares.

  7. JAYJAY- haha it's a small world! Saba is my coordinator too And Dr. Acacio id the "second father" to my DS! Did you have luck with Dr A?
Don't get me wrong I am not dying to do PIO, as long as I know the alternatives are as good. Do they prefer to do PIO with FET is that why they have you do PIO? Maybe I'll run into you at HCR one of these days

  9. I'm often in Glendale....

I didn't have success with Dr. A, not even a chemical! I loved him but my feelings have changed since I've found out that he screwed up 4-5 years of my TTC#1 (long story).

Saba is with Dr. W now and Adeline took over Saba's spot with Dr. N. Saba is great! I was one, if not the ONE, of their most difficult cases at HRC - my chart was 6 inches thick, in the least, and were divided in volumes, LOL! I sure was the one ruining their stats. Will this be your 1st cycle with HRC? Dr. N will keep me on the same protocol as before (PIO and vag. capsules. I cannot have vag. supp it gives me yeast infection - sorry TMI) since that was the cycle that gave me my success. I also didn't like the Lozenges - I think it had an after taste as far as I can remember.

  10. HAHA! No worries about TMI (is there ever such thing on IVFC? LOL
Sorry to hear about Dr A, I know you either love him or hate him... yes, this is my first with HCR. Fingers crossed. SOrry you had such a hard time TTC, hope this FET is a breeze for you. Best of luck, momma!

  11. Another HRC Pasadena girl...

I just finished an IVF cycle (TTC#3 after a 4 year hiatus) and my RE checked my E2/P4 at 5dp5dt and my P4 was borderline. He added the lozenges (purple squares, grape flavor). Unfortunately the cycle was a BFN...but I don't necessarily think it was the form of progesterone that caused the problem...great expanding blast tx'd...we just didn't fall on the other side of the stat this time.

I was on Endometrin 3x/day as well and TBH, I really am considering requesting the PIO for our FET in March/April. The supps were just a mess and you really can't tell what your P4 levels truly are while on them since they don't enter the bloodstream in amounts that are an accurate measure. With my FET 4 years ago (had twin girls) I was on PIO and the supps (only 1x/day), but this 3x/day thing was no fun...I just didn't like feeling damp all the time...not to mention I am just now recovering from the lovely yeast infection it caused.
