Preparation Questions...

  1. Hi All.

I hope you don't mind a couple of questions I have about preparing for our new baby. I actually BF my twins for a little more than two years so I do "sort of" know what to expect but I have come up with a couple of questions I never encountered with my twins...

First of all...bottles. My plan is to exclusively bf my baby however I do want the option of having DH give a bottle of expressed breast milk. For my twins we used Avent bottles because that is what we had at the hospital (they did not get many bottles at all though). Are these "good" bottles? I was looking around BRU yesterday and was totally overwhelmed by the choices. What do you all do when/if you give a bottle?

Secondly, pumps. With my twins, insurance covered a year of a hospital grade rental because they were multiples plus a little early. This time around pump rental will not be covered and I don't want to pay the $50 out of pocket for a hospital grade because I am thinking I won't need one that powerful this time? In any case, I am a part of a moms group and one of the members is selling a Medela pump in style for $30. I am thinking this will do the trick for the few times I will be pumping (I am thinking it would be only for a few bottles per week) but does anyone have any feedback on this? Also, I am having a little trouble getting past a "used" breast pump...am I overthinking this one ?

Thanks so much for the feedback. This BF board was incredibly helpful to me through my nursing adventures w/ the twins and I am thankful to have a place to turn with all my questions.

  2. Hi Kristin,

I know we've chatted already about some of this. I have the Medela Pump in Style and it has worked well. I can't speak to the used pump...I probably wouldn't personally buy one from someone that I didn't know, but that is just me and I am sure it's fine. Those suckers are expensive and luckily I had mine from when I had the twins.

As for bottles. I started a routine of pumping every morning after the first morning feed around 8:30am (that's just how it worked out) @ 3 weeks. I have continued that mostly daily. I can honestly say I am so glad I did. Now I have a stash in my freezer and can leave baby with DH or a sitter if I need to.

We started off using the Advent BPA free bottles and they have worked well, we only have two and that has been fine. I think we introduced the bottle around 4 weeks, but more consistently 5-6 weeks.

  3. I'd buy a new pump rather than a used one. I thought that my new PIS was comparable to the hospital grade one that I'd rented initially.

As for bottles, I'd just look for something that is BPA free. I used the gerber glass bottles because they were so inexpensive. If you liked the Avent before, maybe look at the new BPA free Avent.

Congratulations on the new baby and good luck!

  4. IMO if the pump works fine used is ok. The milk doesn't go into the pump at all. I'd just buy new parts, tubing etc... My PIS works as well as the hospital pump.

We only give dd a bottle or two a week but in the begining it was every day. I bought 3 different kinds to find out which I like, Dr. Browns, Avent and Platex (the curved one). We find that Avent leaks if not screwed on just so. Dh thinks the Platex is the best, he likes how it curves. I like the Platex and Dr. Browns equally. Most bottles are BPA free now, but double check when you buy.

    Good luck and congrats!

  5. Thanks so much for the replies, Britt, mtsalik, and Kris....I am sorry I am so tardy in my thanks as well!!

I decided to go with the bpa free avents for any pumped feedings. I also decided to not go with the used pump...I just couldn't bring myself to do it from someone I did not know very well.

    Thanks again for the advice!
