My IVF story

  1. Hi everyone,
My first post- just thought I'd tell my story.

I met my husband late at 38. I'd never been married before and always wanted to be a mother but didn't want to be a single mum so I waited and waited and waited for Mr Right.

We started trying about 5 months after we met and after 9 months decided intervention was necessary, so off to the IVF clinic.

By the time I had the egg retrieval done, I was 39.5

I cant remember the exact numbers now but I had 21 eggs retrieved - I remember the eggs were 21 as the doctor was slightly surprised, then about 17 fertilised and by day 5 we had 12 left.

On transfer day the doctor showed us 2 blastocysts on the screen, one was popping out of its shell and thats the one he used. He was quite pleased and confident with this one.

Well to cut a long story short, it worked first time and we now have a very healthy daughter who is almost 3.

We decided 12 months later to start transfering the others to try for a second baby. Where I live they are very reluctant to transfer any more than one embryo. In fact the clinic I go to refuses to transfer more than one at a time.

Anyway we went through 3 FET's and no success, each time they thawed 2 to 4 eggs as some didn't survive thawing. I got disheartened and gave up for a while. I even considered getting rid of the remaining FE but couldn't bring myself to sign the papers.

So here I am at 43 and we decided to have one last go with the FE, we only had 2 left.

We went in and only 1 thawed out sucessfully and 1 was transfered.

    The very last one left.

IT WORKED, but I have a low HCG number, in my dissapointment I cant remember if she said it was 46.5 or 26.5 and they would like it to be 50. The nurse told me that it could come up (I have another blood test on Monday) but she said that it didn't look good and not to get excited.

If it doesn't work out I don't know if I will go back as the clinic won't treat women past 44 and I only have 7 months before I'm 44. I also feel greedy as I have 1 child and so many others IVF hasn't worked for.

Anyway I suppose I just wanted to tell my story for others to have some hope.

I\'ll let you all know what the outcome of this pregnancy is. Fingers crossed (and toes, legs, arms and eyes).

  2. I said a prayer today for you and your little embie! Keep us posted.

  3. I also second that silent prayer! I hope everything works out for you!

I am in limbo myself as my hcg beta count was low. I go in for my third to see where it's at. Sticky glue for us all!

  4. Hi Chris 06 - Our stories are very similiar so understand completely.. Good Luck to you and I have heard of low betas that turn out just fine .. try and relax and think positive and talk to your baby ....

    Keep us posted...

  5. Thanks for all the prayers.

Unfortunately, the numbers are going down and the clinic has said It has ended. I knew it wasn't good the next day as the tightness I felt in my belly had gone. My husband (and neighbour) were hopefull as the number was 46 (I checked again) and my neighbour is 5 months pregnant and her number started out at 40.

I'm a bit upset about it as I could feel the embryo implanting and had nausea almost constantly from 2 days before the test till yesterday.

I can't imagine what women go through who get further into a pregnancy. My husband doesn't understand why I'm so upset. He says \"it was only there for 2 weeks\". My answer is \"it doesn't matter how long, it was the start of a baby\".

We have decided to try again with a full cycle even though the odds arn't on our side. We we keep trying until...... it works, we run out of eggs or at the end of this calendar year, (the government used to fund 80% of IVF but their new budget has cut funding to 0 % from 1 jan 2010 and I cant afford it then).

Anyway, by then I think I will have accepted defeat and thank god for the one little miracle I already have.

  6. Chris,

Come to Cornell, they work well with older.

Best in the nation. You have good chance with em.

  7. Chris, I understand how you must feel. I am 42.5. I had one m/c four months ago. I have one child from my first IVF at age 37. We waited until I was 41 to try because I found a lump in my breast at age 40. It was a terrible scare but thank GOD it was benign. But at the same time a loved one got sick and I was one of the caregivers. So IVF had to be put on hold for a good year.

Who knows why things work out the way they do. But if my clinic refused to see me, I'd go to another reputable one that would.

You are in my thoughts and prayers and I wish a wonderful outcome for you.
