  1. Hi everyone,

I am 40.5 years old and just had an ectopic pregnancy via IVF. I hear the stats on this happening is somewhere between 2 to 5 percent of all IVF's so you can imagine my disappointment at being in that low range of statistics.

I need moral support. I have one more IVF left before I fold things up. Does anyone know what causes an ectopic pregnancy? Was it my fault? Is it my age? Was it just supreme bad luck?

I have to wait a few months and I don't feel like I have a few months to spare given my age. I'm so sad, so distressed and quite blue about what happened. It took two months of preparations, diet, acupuncture treatments, the whole nine yards, to be blessed with a positive bfp, to then land in the ER with emergency surgery being performed at 11:30 at night. I am sad!

Thank you for any insight or thoughts.

    Hi mereoni
I am so sorry to hear your news. I won't be able to help you much about giving you information you needed, since I have never gotten pregnant before and I will be turning 40 this Aug with a FSH at 23.4.
May I ask which protocol did your RE use on you?

  3. So sorry. I don't think ectopic pregnancy is related to age. There can be other issues that make ectopic more likely. Just not sure what they are. Maybe someone with more info can post. Good luck with your future choices. I am 42 and with success being so low at my age we went DE and are grateful we did.

  4. mereoni, you just had some bad luck. I'm so sorry. You must feel awful. No, it's not your fault. But you are still young(ish) so I would get started again as soon as the doctors give you the green light. At 40 years old, you still have a decent chance. I wouldn't worry so much about diet or acupuncture, just get busy cycling; IVF, IUI, timed intercourse, give it a shot every month if possible.

  5. mereoni I think you need to talk to your RE about the take home baby rates at you clinic and check the statistics at www.sart.com. I don't want to disagree with the previous poster but even at the best clinics the take home baby rates are low for the over 40 group. Doing IVF or even IUI's every month are not possible for many people and you might want to take a look at all the options available for you (with the best chance of success) and choose which direction to go with your resources. I recently read that one lady did IVF 11 times and her doctor was still encouraging her to try again. Just use caution with this economy many clinics are in need of patients so use all your resources and good luck.

I realize that take home rates are low...and then I see or hear about someone, who's 40, pregnant with twins or a singleton and I feel there is always hope. In the past few IUI attempts, I did get pregnant and both ended in chemicals. Then I just finished the IVF and it turned out ectopic. I realize I'm in a grim statistical line, at my age, and will consider DE. I've one more IVF left in this cycle plan I've paid for and will talk to my RE tomorrow about some things.
I've probably waited too long and I realize that.

  7. Hi garifalia,

My RE used an estrogen priming protocol for me. I think I stimmed for too long for the cycle though and will ask about reducing my cycle time line for a shorter one. I'd rather have fewer eggs that were better quality than a good ratio that are poor. I produced about 15 eggs with 12 retrieved and 9 fertilized. We transferred 4 (3) day 8 cell embies with A-B quality rating. None made it to 5 day blast to freeze. Only one stuck and it landed in my tube of all things.

If I do this again, I want all transferred. With my odds, it won't matter if there are more than 4.

Wow mereoni, you have 15eggs? That is alot for women our age. My RE doesnt think I will get more than 1 or 2, although he is hoping for 4-5. Your result did look promising with 4 3-8cell embies. I think you are so close to your dream....

  9. Hi mereoni! I am so sorry about your loss. I had been following your story and was really rooting for you. I have not had experience with ectopics but I have read in some posts that some women decide to remove their tubes after an ectopic to prevent another one. Maybe you can ask your RE about that.

  10. I am so sorry. I don't think either that ectopic pregnancy is related to age. It can be related to the place the RE place the eggs. It is rare. 15 eggs is fantastic. DO not be discourage, Do not fear your age you can still get pregnant and have a healthy baby.

You probably will need a couple of months for your uterus to recover, but it is not a fertility killer. Many women have had babies after 40.

  11. Thank you, everyone, for your replies. I just got back from my RE and he said it's more likely a case of rotten luck. I had 12 eggs retrieved, with 8 of them fertilizing, and 4 were put back in. I was on the Estrogen Priming Protocol and will try this same one again in a few months.

I'll be 41 in December so this will be my last chance with my own eggs. If I consider a pregnancy afterward, should this second cycle not work, then I'll go with donor eggs.

The ectopic was unfortunate. It was growing too well...so I probably had a good embryo in there, just in the wrong spot. Emotionally, it's difficult because you gear your mind, body and heart for the best.

  12. mereoni - I am sorry about your ectopic. From what I read it is bad luck, although I did read the odds of ectopic are higher with IVF. Glad you are ok - most importantly. I have read some bad stories about ectopic pregnancies. Best of luck on this next cycle!

  13. I had an ectopic after an iui. It was really upsetting. I was lucky they caught it early and I treated with methotrexate. That was so sad too. However, I went on to get pregnant again. Also via iui (after 3 failed ivfs) and had my DD. I got pregnant at 42 with my own eggs. I am currently trying again, so far no luck.

While ectopic is sad it does not have to be the end of the road.

  14. So sorry to hear about your ectopic.

  15. Thank you, everyone, for your support. I am watching Xena marathons for pure enjoyment and fun.
