Does your belly drop earlier with twins?

  1. Just wondering if anyone else remembers from a past pg or currently experiencing what I am. I swear in the last week I can almost see my toes again but side on my belly seems so much lower. I can also feel baby a's hands extremely low like almost in the top of my leg. (little exaggeration) I am 30 1/2 weeks and hoping this isn't a sign they are planning an early escape. The u/s tech at my last fetal assessment at 29 weeks said they were 3 1/2 pounds each and combined the size of an average newborn. She said to take it easy since the uterus is a stupid muscle that has no idea that there are two premies in there and not one big baby. That got me a bit worried and maybe a little paranoid.

Thanks in advance, hope this makes sense.

  2. I don't know that it necessarily drops earlier with multiples---it just sort of stretches out in all different directions. Some days, I looked lop-sided, because all the babies were pushing toward the left or the right. When there's not much room to grow, your belly will morph on you. I do recall looking bigger some weeks more than others. At 34 weeks, I was all front. At 35, I was just this huge blob (all over!), and at 36 weeks, I literally was all front with a head bulging out at a diagonal angle so as to make my belly look very deformed. At some points, I literally thought my belly would pop. There's only so much your skin can take!

So, yeah, the babies move, your belly shifts...it can get weird in there the last few weeks. Good luck!!!

  3. It is interesting you posted this. I am 28.4 weeks and woke up on Friday and could suddenly breathe again. My belly is much lower and just when I started to think it was me, a few co-workers noticed, along with my husband. I do think they shift a lot, but maybe the combined weight makes you drop sooner. With my dd, I dropped a few weeks before my due date, maybe 4? She stayed low for the duration of the pregnancy. I guess we will see!!

  4. thanks manricotesti and Nadia. I am also really short wasted so there is only so much room for them to expand before they take any available space which may happen to be lower than my last pg. I am for sure bigger now than I was at 39 weeks when I delivered my singleton so it makes sense that it's different from here on in.

We shall see, thanks for taking the time to post.

All the best manricotesti in the final stretch of your pg and thanks Nadia (supermom). I still can't believe you carried three for that long. AMAZING!

  5. It is normal to have your belly \"change\" how it looks or even dropping as you get farther into the pg. Having said that, mine stayed up high all the way to delivering my twins.

  6. Thank you Jay Jay, I am sure I am just paranoid. I have nothing else that is making me think there could be something wrong. I have an appointment in the morning so I'll be able to ask a few questions and put my mind at ease.

  7. Susan---no not Supermom. I just got lucky with a cervix of steel and cooperative babies.

But yeah, once I got to 28 weeks, I breathed a huge sigh of relief but still felt a bit tense until 33 weeks. Once I got to 33 weeks, I wanted to make it to 34, and once I got to 34 and a few days, I wanted to say I made it to 35 weeks. At 35 weeks, well, the doctors made it sound like they'd let me go till 40 weeks, and I had no signs of pre-e or PTL, so that made me a nervous wreck. (At that pt, you start to think it might be safer to just have the babies out already before something goes wrong last minute inside you since you went so far).
If you can get to 36 weeks, I'd say you're doing well. That's the ave. pg. for twin moms and most babies are take-home babies at that pt. You're really close. And, at this pt., you're already in much safer territory, so take a deep breath! You're doing great

  8. Nadia, I can't buuuuuulieve your doc would push you to 40 wks with trips! My peri's goal was to get twin pgs to 38 weeks. In my 36th week I had an appointment and went bezerk when I heard 38 weeks, I was so uncomfortable. LOL, I can't imagine THREE in there at 36 weeks They were born at the end of 36 weeks (miraculously we made it that far, as I had a turbulent pg).

Yeah, my peri told me she didn't want to schedule a c-section. She wanted to wait until I went into labor on my own or had pre-e. Seemed crazy to me! (I did that one FFN test at 35wks. and it came back negative, so I begged for a c-section, because I was so scared of being home alone with DH at work and going into labor at 37+ weeks...I could barely get around at that pt.). I know we were lucky to go that far, but I remember freaking out even at the end, because at that pt. I'd made it so far...I didn't want anything to go wrong.

But, I'm sure you were HUGE at that pt. too. 38 wks. does sound like a long time to go with multiples! And wasn't it you that basically hid your pg. till the end? You are amazing, because I could not stop my mega waddle after 8 weeks, and it only got worse. I still remember trying to hide my pg. at 4 mo. and how hard that was! (I was actually almost embarrassed by it and scared of people knowing about it, because I didn't want to hear the \"Did you do fert. drugs?\" quest. and didn't want to jinx anything.

Well, I didn't want my friends (mostly fertiles/or had no kids by choice) and certainly NOT my CRAZY family to know! I was so burned at that point (with my loss history/numerous IVFs), ya know? DH did tell his father, and swore him to secreacy, at 24 weeks (he is very close with him), and told his mother a few weeks before I delivered--neither one was told it was twins (and they didn't ask). Other than them, know one knew--it was better for me that way, because I was having a hard time with multiple runs to L&D starting early on. My neighbors are a bunch of senior citizens, and aren't even home most of the summer, and those that were around only saw me waist up when I waved to them from my car (bedresting alot) when I drove to my numerous appointments, lol. But, yeah, I did get kind a big in the end, I think my tummy needed little legs or something to hold it up!

Getting 2 grandbabies at once must have been the shock of a lifetime for them...a good one, of course
