Annika vs. Alessia

  1. Baby is scheduled to arrive in just under 4w and DH and I are having trouble agreeing on a name for this girl. Our favourites are
    Annika
    Alessia
In all likelihood he will agree to my middle name choice, the current favourite being Marielle.

Anyone have comments on which they like better and why?

  2. I prefer Alessia. It sounds a little prettier to me. It goes well with Marielle too.

  3. Alessia gets my vote.

  4. Personally I like Annika better. Annika Marielle. Sounds good to me.

  5. sorry, Kasamanli- i like annika better. reason: cuz i do....

  6. I like Annika better too. Sounds great with your MN choice!

  7. Definitely like Annika better - it both sounds more pleasant to me and I'm not jazzed about 4 syllable names.

  8. My vote is for Annika. It's my DD's name. Alessia sounds too...fancy to me. NMS.

  9. I like Annika....I'm a teacher and Alessia has been growing in popularity. I've had at least one every year. Not sure if it is the same in Canada though....

  10. I like Annika better. Its a nice name all around and Alessia seems trendy and a mouthful to say.

  11. Hi Kasamanli

I personally LOVE Annika but both names are nice.

Not sure if it is the same in Canada though....Interesting... the vital statistics for my province say that there were 6 Alessias born in 2007 and 5 in 2008 while there were 19 Annikas in 2007 and 50 last year!

  13. Just out of curiosity will you be pronouncing Annika Ann ika or An neeka? Sorry if that looks weird, just wondering about the sound. I know a few Annika's and 1 pronounced Aneeka but spelled Annika!

  14. Kasamanli,
Regarding popularity , I checked this website ssa.gov and Annika has been around 380 in the top 1000 names in 2007 and 2006 and Alessia has never been in the top 1000 names in the past 9 years.

  15. Just out of curiosity will you be pronouncing Annika Ann ika or An neeka? Sorry if that looks weird, just wondering about the sound. I know a few Annika's and 1 pronounced Aneeka but spelled Annika!DH and I are both first generation Canadians with practically all of our relatives back in Germany, so we've tried to ensure our kids names were pronounced much the same in both English and German. Annika would be A'-nee-kah (emphasis on the first syllable).

  16. That is the pronounciation I was thinking about...and that is what makes me really love it.

That being said, I really like Alessia too, so I think it's a win/win either way (JMHO!)

But if you're looking for something more along your cultural lines, I'd pick Annika.

Sounds like a good one! Congrats on your pg.

  18. Thanks for the input ladies!

We didn't give baby a name until she was two days old and we were being discharged from hospital. In that time I tried a couple of options, but nothing seemed just right. In the end, we didn't use any of the names here as a first name, but did keep Alessia as a second name. Baby's first name was one of the choices on the list that neither of us thought we'd actually use, but as we reviewed the list one last time it just suited her so well that we kept it -- a real dark horse of a name in that sense.
